Rail passengers returning to work will find their wallets lighter than usual because of whopping annual season ticket price rises of up to 13%.
The overall cost of a yearly ticket rose by an average of 6.2% which is nearly double the consumer price inflation rate of 3.3% and astonishingly almost three times the typical pay rise of 2.2%.
“People using public transport are also unlikely to switch to travelling by car because consistently increasing fuel prices are already causing some to struggle with bad credit debt.”
In fact the cost of petrol has soared by 18% over the past year to average 127.71p a litre, the industry is now predicting petrol to increase to over 130p per litre within the next few weeks, as the cost of oil is on the increase again.
David Cameron has stated he will look to help the motorist with petrol costs, by suspending some duty, we can only wait and hope to see if this happens.
Most rail users will have little choice but to face the staggering price rises, with certain lines increasing costs by 12.8%.
Passengers on some commuter routes will see their costs rise to more than £5,000 a year, equivalent to a fifth of the average salary of £25,000, a figure which could easily push them into bad credit debt - /bad-credit-consolidation-loans.html
Consumer groups throughout Britain have been quick to stand up for furious passengers, but have also warned that the government has given the go-ahead for train operators to raise prices even higher over the next few years.
Alexandra Woodsworth, spokesperson for the Campaign for Better Transport, said; “Passengers shouldn’t have to put up with such outrageously expensive fare hikes each and every new year.”
‘We are in danger of pricing people off the train, reducing access to jobs and increasing congestion and carbon emissions.”
“Instead, we need cheaper, simpler, fairer fares that make taking the train a realistic option.”
Ashwin Kumar, rail director of customer pressure group Passenger Focus, said; “At a time when other businesses are cutting costs to win customers, many passengers are now having to pay above inflation fare rises.”
“Many passengers have no choice but to catch the train and for these people the railway won’t seem fair or good value for money.”
During the autumn of 2010 an average of one train in seven ran late and 18 of the 19 train companies saw their punctuality drop.
“As living costs continue to rise, its understandable that services and goods will generally cost more,” stated Andrew James of Bad Credit Loans 4 You.
“What many passengers are struggling to grasp is why the increase is so huge, especially when the service they are being provided seems to be getting worse.”
“It’s frustrating to pay the huge extra fares and not see any benefits.”
Train companies are allowed to increase regulated fares this month by 5.8%, 1% above last years retail price inflation which stood at 4.8%, as well as raising unregulated fares by up to 6.2%.
However, prices on individual routes can rise even higher, which could add as much as 12.8% on to some commuters’ costs.
Michael Roberts, chief executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) said; “We know times are tough for many people but fare increases will ensure that Britain can continue investing in its railways.”
“Even with these fare increases, the money passengers spend on fares covers only half the cost of running the railways, taxpayers make up the difference.”
The Government has decided that taxpayers should pay a smaller share of the cost of travel, currently split 50-50 with passengers.
This was confirmed by Mr Roberts; “The government is sticking with the previous administration’s policy to cut the taxpayers’ contribution to the overall cost of running the railways.”
A Department for Transport spokesman said; “Revenue from fares enables the Government to continue to deliver much-needed improvements on the rail network.”
However, many commuters are still dubious about where the money is being spent and are annoyed at the time it is taking for improvements to have a positive effect on their journey.
