Britons searching for the best place to make their holiday spending money go further can look closer to home for their bargain trip, according to a new survey.
Portugal and Spain have topped the charts in a list of nations which offer the cheapest items typically bought with travel cash whilst away.
“But in recent times the pound has suffered against the euro, so many British travellers have looked to take their holiday spending money further afield.”
Prices are thought to have fallen by 49% over the past 12 months according to research by the Post Office, making it a great place to take your vacation money.
The country is now considered the cheapest destination to purchase typical holiday spending items in a 10-nation list.
A three-course meal, drinks and suncream were found to cost a total of just £32.84 in Portugal, with Spain the next-cheapest country at £36.68.
“Portugal is expected to enter into a recession this year, which may make the debt-laden country even more attractive to UK visitors,” said Mr James, of Bad Credit Loans 4 You.
“Just like with our recent recession, it doesn’t spell particularly good news for the inhabitants, but holidaymakers will be able to profit from this and strike a bargain to get more for their travel cash.”
Of the 10 popular destinations surveyed, Malaysia was found to be the most expensive, with the items costing £47.68, severely hampering any holiday credit.
The survey by Post Office Travel Money also looked at how the pound had faired against the foreign currencies in the last 12 months.
Malaysia, Australia, Thailand and South Africa were all up, meaning you got less travel cash to spend than before.
British holidaymakers will benefit from extra holiday spending money in countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia and the eurozone due to improved exchange rates.
Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said; “Over the past two years popular resorts in the (Portuguese) Algarve and the (Spanish) Costas suffered badly from a drop in UK visitors, put off by the prospect of higher costs because of the weak pound.”
“Restaurants and bars responded by slashing prices in a battle for business and competition between the two, and together with an improving exchange rate, has resulted in a price crash in Portugal and Spain.”
The Post Office detailed its fastest-growing currencies in terms of sales during 2010 compared with 2009 were those of Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Latvia and China.
