Holiday Disruption a Possibility As Scientists Warn Of another Icelandic Volcano Set to Erupt

Reports of another volcano which is set to erupt in Iceland has led scientists to warn of possible holiday disruption on an even bigger scale than what was witnessed last year.

Geologists have noticed an increased group of earthquakes around the islands second largest volcano, Bárdarbunga, suggesting there is a high risk of a new eruption.

Holidaymakers who have already booked a half-term break or summer holiday will be concerned that the volcano might affect their travel money plans,” said Andrew James, spokesperson for Bad Credit Loans 4 You, a UK finance specialist at sourcing holiday spending money and travel finance for a holiday on credit /quick-bad-credit-loans.html

“We’d advise anyone who has planned to spend their travel cash or already secured their money for holiday that they take out travel insurance which will cover against any cancellations should the volcano cause disruption.”

The volcano has the power to emit a blanket of dust into the atmosphere which would dwarf last year’s event.

Pall Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, said the area around Bárdarbunga showed signs of increased activity, which provides 'good reason to worry'.

He told Icelandic TV News, “This is the most active areas of the country if we look at the whole country together.”

“There is no doubt that lava there is slowly growing, and the seismicity of the last few days is a sign of it.”

“We need better measurements because it is difficult to determine the depth of earthquakes because it is in the middle of the country and much of the area is covered with glaciers.”

The eruption of volcano’s near Eyjafjallajokull last year caused chaos around the world as hundreds of planes were grounded due to an ash cloud, with thousands of passengers missing out on their holiday on credit.

Eruptions burst through the shattered ice sheets within the mountain crater, churning out a torrent of thick ash, dust and steam high into the air.

Jón Frímann, a respected volcano watcher, said on his volcano watch blog; “After the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption in 2010 it seems that geologists in Iceland take earthquake swarms more seriously than they did before.”

Mr Frímann went on to explain that the Icelandic Met Office had on Sunday warned of the increased risk of an eruption in north-west side of Vatnajökulll glacier due to the high earthquake activity in the area.

“It is clear that only time is going to tell us if there is going to be an eruption in this area soon or not,” he added.

The last recorded eruption of Bárdarbunga was in 1910, although volcanologists believe its last major eruption occurred in 1477 when it produced a sizeable plume of ash and pumice and the largest known lava flow during the past 10,000 years.

It is the second largest volcano on Iceland and by comparison, Bárdarbunga dwarves the Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

“Last years shut down of airspace resulted in a loss of holiday cash for many families, whilst others needed additional holiday cash to spend as they were stranded abroad,” said Mr James, of Bad Credit Loans 4 You.

“Make sure that you have spare money for travel in case of an emergency, even if you need to take out a bad credit holiday loan.”

“Having the required travel insurance will only enable you to claim back the holiday money spent after the event and will still leave you low on holiday money when you’re away.”
