Global Denture Adhesive Makers Sued Over 'Nerve Damage'
The manufacturer of Fixodent, the globally sold denture adhesive, is being sued over allegations the product causes nerve damage.
Lawyers representing former users blame the popular adhesive, which contains the compound zinc, for causing neurological illnesses.

Fixodent is widely used in Britain, where the formula also contains small amounts of zinc to help give the adhesive more grip.
Anne Coffman, one of the claimants in the American class action lawsuit against makers Procter & Gamble, claims use of the product caused numbness in her limbs.
Upon having her condition examined, the 48-year-old was diagnosed with zinc poisoning, where high levels of the metal interfere with the body’s absorption of copper which can lead to irreversible nerve problems.
Ms Coffman said; “Fixodent is the only product that I’ve ever used that has zinc in it.”
In what claimants say is a related case, Mark Jacoby, said he became increasingly unsteady on his feet and ended up in a wheelchair after using the denture adhesive.
The 41-year-old has worn dentures for 20 years and Doctors eventually tied his disorder to high levels of the mineral zinc in his body.
He told ABC News that he believed the contamination came from his denture cream, which he has now stopped using; “I can almost guarantee you it was the Fixodent. It's soaked into your body and it messes with the nerves.”
A study reported in the journal, Neurology, in 2009 made a connection between the adhesive and neurological disease.
Researchers at the University of Texas said during the study they found all four denture users had high zinc levels that could be measured in the blood.
The publication of the study was delayed for two years after Dr Kenneth Shay released a review saying the study was ‘little more than speculation’.
However, an ABC News investigation found Dr Shay was a paid consultant for Procter & Gamble when he reviewed the study.
Dr Shaw defended his review by telling ABC News the report had 'objective shortcomings.'

Procter & Gamble added a warning label to its Fixodent packaging in 2009, saying that ‘prolonged zinc intake may be linked to adverse health effects’.
