New research has highlighted the impact which working on a computer has towards the risk of heart disease.
Scientists discovered those who spend more than four hours a day in front of a computer screen or television are 125% more likely to suffer major heart problems leading to hospitalisation or death, compared to those who spend two hours or less a day.
The average adult in Britain is thought to spend three to four hours every day watching TV, but many spend up to eight hours a day in front of a computer at work.
The study found there is also a 48% increase in deaths from any cause among people who spend too much time staring at a screen, whether it’s a TV, computer or laptop.
The risk was discovered to rise irrespective of other factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, weight and social class and even exercise could not make up for the damage caused.
Dr Emmanuel Stamatakis, of University College London’s public health department, said; “Our analysis suggests that two or more hours of screen time each day may place someone at greater risk for a cardiac event.”
“People who spend excessive amounts of time in front of a screen are more likely to die of any cause and suffer heart-related problems.”
Inflammation and metabolic problems caused by long periods of inactivity could be to blame for the increased risks, the report said. Dr Stamatakis said that prolonged sitting could cause a 90 per cent reduction in a vital enzyme called lipoprotein lipase that helps prevent heart disease.
Hewlett Packard is the world's largest seller of PCs, shipping nearly 18 million computers in the last three months of 2010, but its worldwide shipments declined by about 1% from the same period a year earlier, according to separate reports from IDC and the Gartner research group.
Samsung is the world’s largest seller of televisions, but neither of these companies is expected to see their sales figures take a hit due to the results of the research carried out.
Dr Stamatakis advised those who work in front of a computer should take a break by going for a brief walk every 20 minutes to reduce their risk.
He said; “Standing and moving about results in at least 50% more energy expenditure than sitting down so such approaches may also be very promising for tackling the obesity epidemic."
“A totally feasible and realistic redesign of the workplace and home environments can easily convert long periods of time during the workday that currently are strictly sedentary into a mixture of sitting, standing and light intensity activity. This would be an excellent start.”
People who have to work in front of computers have been advised to limit the amount of time they spend watching TV.
Recreational guidelines on screen time could also be issued by the government to provide the public with more knowledge surrounding the issue.
Mr James, of Bad Credit Loans 4 You, said; “Watching TV is totally optional but is an activity which adults currently spend between three to four hours a day on average doing in the UK.”
“This is more than 20% of the total time you are awake and is considered to be excessive.”
Mr James, of Bad Credit Loans 4 You, went on to add; “Computer use and watching TV should be a key target of public health interventions.”
“Heart disease and poor health in general is now thought to not be the only result of high cholesterol, diets high in fat, smoking and low exercise,” said Mr James of Bad Credit Loans 4 You.
