Return of Severe Weather Threatens Christmas Present Deliveries and Fresh Chaos for Holidaymakers
Many UK families face an anxious wait to discover whether Christmas presents purchased online will arrive in time for Christmas day after new warnings of heavy snow fall to strike this week.
The adverse conditions helped boost online retailers sales as consumers opted to shop at home, safe from treacherous roads and cancelled trains, but the record levels of snowfall has increased the pressure on companies to get them delivered in time.

Forecasters have confirmed another band of snow is destined to blanket the UK, bringing further bad news to postal service workers, some of whom are already making Sunday deliveries to try and catch up with the current backlog.

“During Thursday the band of cold weather is likely to begin as rain and sleet spreading across the country, but that will start to turn to snow.”

Strong blizzards and severe overnight frosts will hit some areas, with temperatures consistently hovering around freezing.
These lows will be joined by bitter north-westerly winds which will make it feel as low as -10c (14f).
“The next few days will see frantic efforts by postal works attempting to catch up on the backlog, although with an estimated 4 million parcels backlogged it is seeming more impossible for them by the hour. Many major supermarkets have suspended home deliveries in Scotland and the North East and courier companies are urging internet companies to not take any further orders for Christmas from these areas, as they fear delivery will be impossible under these weather conditions.” said Mr James of Bad Credit Loans 4 You.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said; “We’re working very hard, but as always we encourage people to post mail or place online orders as early as possible.”
The forecast of icy roads by the Met Office keeps the grit supplies under pressure, but the Department for Transport insists stocks remain higher than last winter when shortages for most councils caused havoc.
Bookmakers are reporting a surge of bets on a white Christmas, with Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle priced at 3/1 by William Hill to have snowfall on Christmas Day.
