Researchers at the Good Housekeeping Institute have remarkably answered most bad credit Christmas dinner problems by trawling through the UK’s leading supermarkets and creating the ultimate Christmas feast on a budget.
For only £2.63 per head, it would only be natural to think that some essentials are missing, but the organisation has managed to shop around and find a Christmas turkey meal which feeds eight people for only £21.
Consumer editor at Good Housekeeping, Caroline Bloor, said; “It’s easy to get carried away at Christmas and spend a fortune on food, but you really don’t have too.”
“And while offers and discounts can be a good thing, don’t go overboard and buy large quantities regardless, try to calculate what you will actually need otherwise you will end up actually wasting money and food.”
Planning and shopping for Christmas dinner is one of the most stressful parts of a families Christmas preparations and those with bad credit have additional worries over how to stay within budget and not need money for Christmas.
Those families hoping to get their traditional Christmas dinner celebrations sorted without requiring Xmas loans will see the list of 11 festive essentials as an early Christmas present, helping them with saving money at Christmas.
The most expensive item on the traditional Christmas dinner list is the Maitre Special Frozen Turkey from Lidl.
Weighing in between 3.8kg and 4.2kg, the German discount stores centrepiece offers great value, while a 1kg bag of carrots from the same supermarket only costs 49p.
Morrisons was found to offer the best value 2kg bag of King Edward potatoes at only £1, along with two 500g bags of parsnips at £1.
However, Asda provided most of the items chosen for the budget traditional Christmas dinner list.
Asda’s own brand cranberry sauce is only 68p, two Christmas cake bars are priced at £2.08 and a 150g tub of brandy butter is only £1.18.
Two packs of Asda’s Smart Price branded mince pies are £1.26 and two Smart Price Christmas puddings total £2.08.
Cutting back on price to reject the need for Xmas loans is perfectly sensible, but does it mean that the products will be inferior in taste?
“We have blind taste-tested a huge range of Christmas food for our December issue and in many categories supermarket own brands scored higher than branded or specialist retailers’ equivalents”, confirmed Caroline Bloor.
Good Housekeeping also produced a list to give an idea of how much each of the stores would charge for all 11 of the traditional Christmas dinner essentials, with Asda coming out on top at £23.90 or £2.99 per person.
Shopping at Lidl would cost £29.31, Morrisons £29.48 and Tesco surprisingly was far off the pace at £30.37.
A Christmas dinner basket at the Co-op would cost £31.47, Sainsbury’s £35.89 and Marks and Spencer was the most expensive at £40.16.
This type of comparison is very difficult to make because it is almost impossible to compare like for like on both quality and quantity, but it gives bad credit shoppers on a tight budget a good idea of how to go about saving money at Christmas.
